Chapter Fifteen

Tessa

I head for my room, with Lake trailing behind me. When I open the door to the guest bedroom, I stop in my tracks. Just inside my room sit ten large expensive-looking rectangular heather gray shopping bags with shimmery tissue paper darting out from the tops.

I know those bags and the store name because I hold a smaller version of it in my hand with a pair of designer jeans and a shirt that Lake bought me.

“Juniper’s” reads along all ten bags as I recount each one.

“Where did all this come from?” I ask my eyebrows stitching together. I don’t have to bother to look behind me, I know that Lake is standing there.

Now I know why he was whistling to himself on the way up and was walking uncharacteristically slow.

He was waiting for me to open the door and see what was inside.

“I asked Harmony to add a few things to my tab,” he says, looking over my shoulder at the contents of my room. His closeness after everything tonight has my body on alert to every movement he makes now.

“A few things?” I ask dramatically, scrunching my nose. “This is not a few things. This is a completely new wardrobe. How am I supposed to get all of this home?”

“I’ll pay for the extra baggage fees,” he says over my shoulder still looking in at all of the stuff.

“I can make do with what I have and for all we know, my luggage is probably on its way here now.”

Lake's eyes slant down at me as if to say “We both know you’re never getting your luggage.”

I can’t even convince myself with the lame excuse, my clothes are never going to get here, but I really could make do for the next few days that we’re still in Aspen. Chelsea would have let me borrow more items out of her closet if I asked. She tried to get me to take more before I left earlier today.

“I owed you the shopping spree that we agreed on our last bet anyway. And I asked her to only send me the things that looked good on you. I guess a lot of shit looks good on you,” he says, close behind me.

“Why would you do this for me?”

“Maybe I feel bad that you lost your wallet, your luggage and you almost stayed the night in a brothel.”

Good point.

“Well, when you put it like that…” I say.

“Just wear the clothes and let me worry about getting them home for you. Or leave them here. I have a feeling you’ll be back.”

I turn to see him gleaming, and his hands stuffed in his pockets.

I can feel my forehead creasing in confusion at his words. “I’ll be back? To Aspen? I doubt it. And why would I ever stay here even if I did?”

I’m not so sure I wouldn’t come back, just next time… without Lake.

“You don’t hate it here as you pretend to. I can see it. You’re enjoying yourself, admit it.
